Beaded necklace of fossilized whalebone, with Argentium silver beads and pendant of Ocean Jasper.
This unique necklace has a warm, earthy feel thanks to the soft brown tones of the beads and the muted earthtone colours of the ocean Jasper cabochon pendant.
The beads are petrified whale bone, in which the original bone has been filled in by pockets of agate and quartz in mostly rich brown and caramel colours, but with the occasional flash of blue. This material is found only around Santa Barbara, California, and is estimated at around 10 million years old!
The pendant is a cabochon of Ocean Jasper, showing the typical circles pattern of this interesting stone. This jasper is shades of cream, brown, and green, and its bubbly look inspired the wirework and granulation design of the setting I created.
The pendant hangs from a textured bail, with the back of the pendant textured also, along with the sides of the beads I made. These beads are also granulated, and add a lot of shine and interest to the whole piece.
Necklace is 19 inches long, with a silver S-clasp. The pendant hangs 1 3/4 inches long, including the bail, and is 1 inch wide. The large silver beads are about 1/2 inch in diameter, and the whale bone beads range from 3.5 to 12.5 mm.
